Punto Banco · player, banker or tie

History

Baccarat developed in Italy and France in the 15th–16th centuries as a card game of the nobility. The word "baccara" means zero in Italian — a reference to the face cards, which score no points. The Punto Banco version played in casinos today became established in South America and Havana in the mid-20th century, and turned into a high-stakes game.

Baccarat was long a game of the nobility and later of the wealthy — the James Bond films made it a symbol of glamour in the West. In Macau the game holds a completely different position: it is the backbone of the casino industry, and many players track results on "bead plates" looking for patterns, even though every deal is independent.

Where it is played today

Baccarat is by far the most popular table game in Macau, the world’s largest casino city, where it generates the majority of casino revenue. In the West it is known as a high-stakes game, but online also at ordinary stakes. Punto Banco requires no skill — all decisions are made by fixed rules.

Rules

Before the deal you bet on one of three options: Player, Banker or Tie. Both Player and Banker get two cards. A hand’s value is the sum of the cards modulo 10 (e.g. 7+8=15 → 5). A third card is dealt by fixed rules. The higher hand wins. Player pays 1:1, Banker 0.95:1 (5% commission), Tie 8:1.

Odds & the maths

The Banker bet is the best: its house edge is only 1.06%, because the banker wins slightly more often — which is why a 5% commission is charged. The Player bet has a house edge of 1.24%. The Tie looks attractive with its 8:1 payout, but its house edge is about 14.4% — clearly the worst bet on the table. The lesson: a high payout does not mean a good bet.

Baccarat’s mathematics is exceptionally clear because the player makes no decisions. The third-card rules are fixed, so the house edge of each bet can be calculated precisely. The Banker bet is one of the best possible casino bets at a 1.06% house edge — yet the tie tempts players with its 8:1 payout, even though it is more than ten times worse. This is baccarat’s most important lesson.

The banker wins slightly more often than the player — that is why a 5% commission is charged. The tie’s 8:1 payout looks tempting, but its house edge is more than ten times the banker’s.

Beginner’s guide

Baccarat is one of the simplest casino games to play: you make no decisions during the deal. Just choose what to bet on. A beginner should stick to the Banker or Player bets and avoid the Tie, however tempting its payout. Watch how the third-card rules play out automatically — you do not need to memorise them, but it is instructive to see them.
