Prize Scratch
Prizes (3 of a kind)
Reveal 5 prizes · 3 alike wins
History
Scratch cards using prize symbols developed in the 1980s, when lotteries noticed that themed symbols (money bags, diamonds, cars) sold better than plain numbers. Seeing a symbol feels more concrete than a number — even though the mathematics is exactly the same.
The introduction of themed prize symbols in the 1980s was a marketing breakthrough. Lotteries noticed that an image of a money bag or a diamond sells better than a plain number, because it evokes a concrete image of the prize. Today lotteries constantly release new themes — seasonal, local, even tied to films.
Where it is played today
Themed prize cards are now the most common type of scratch card. Lotteries release new themes constantly — seasonal, movie-themed, local. At online casinos, "instant win" games use the same visual logic to attract clicks.
Rules
The card has five covered prize cells. You scratch them open. If three matching prize symbols are found, you win that prize’s value multiplied by your bet. Only three of a kind among the five triggers a win.
Odds & the maths
On a five-cell card the probability of three of a kind is lower than on a nine-cell card, but the prizes are sized accordingly. As with all scratch cards, the return to player is typically 60–70%. The visual appeal of the symbols does not change the mathematics at all — it is purely a marketing layer.
The mathematics of a five-cell card is a good exercise in probability: finding three of a kind among five random symbols is clearly less likely than among nine. The lottery compensates for this with larger prizes, but the end result is always the same: the return to player stays at 60–70% regardless of the number of cells.
| Outcome | Pays | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| At least 3 of a kind (win) | 3×–80× | ~13% |
| Exactly 3 of a kind | 3×–80× | ~11.5% |
| 4 or 5 of a kind | 3×–80× | ~1.5% |
| No three of a kind | — | ~87% |

Beginner’s guide
Set a bet, buy a card, scratch the prizes open one at a time or all at once. Look for three matching symbols. A good observation: a five-cell card resolves quickly, which makes it addictive — you can buy many in a row in a short time. That very speed is the risk of scratch cards: the result is immediate, so it is easy to keep going.
