Classic 3-Reel Slot
Paytable (3 of a kind)
1 payline · classic symbols
History
The first slot machine, the Liberty Bell, was built by mechanic Charles Fey in San Francisco in 1895. It had three reels and five symbols, including the liberty bell that gave the game its name. The classic 3-reel is a direct descendant of that machine — the same simple structure over a hundred years later.
Charles Fey’s Liberty Bell was so popular that it was widely copied — Fey had not patented his invention. During the early-20th-century prohibition era, machines were modified to pay out winnings as candy and chewing gum, which gave fruit symbols their origin. Mechanical reels remained the heart of the game for almost 80 years, until electronics replaced them.
Where it is played today
Classic 3-reel slots still appear on the floors of Las Vegas casinos as nostalgia machines, and online they are played for their "traditional" feel. They are popular with beginners because the game is easy to understand: one line, one bet, three reels.
Rules
Set your bet, press Spin, and the three reels stop on random symbols. If all three symbols on the centre line match, you win according to the paytable. The rarer the symbol, the bigger the win.
Odds & the maths
Each reel has six symbols, so the probability of three of a kind for one specific symbol is (1/6)³ = 1/216. The combined probability of all winning combinations and their payouts determines the game’s return to player (RTP). On real machines RTP is typically 90–96% — the rest is the house edge. Every spin is fully independent of the last.
The most important thing to learn from slots is independence: the reels do not "remember" previous spins, and the machine does not get "hot" or "cold". If a symbol’s probability is 1/6, it is 1/6 on every spin regardless of what just happened. This is the same principle as a coin toss — and it is why no way of playing can beat a slot in the long run.
| Combination | Pays | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| Any three of a kind | varies | 1 in 36 (2.78%) |
| 3 × a specific symbol | 3×–50× | 1 in 216 (0.46%) |
| 3 × 7️⃣ (top) | 50× | 1 in 216 (0.46%) |
| No win | — | 35 in 36 (97.22%) |
Each reel has 6 symbols, so the probability of three of a specific symbol is (1/6)³. This structure produces the game’s return to player.
Beginner’s guide
This is the simplest slot, so it is a good first one. Adjust the bet with the +/− buttons and press Spin. Look at the paytable: it tells you exactly what each three-of-a-kind combination pays. Notice that you cannot influence the result in any way — a slot is pure chance, unlike, say, blackjack.
